It’s a lovely, sunny, Saturday afternoon here in Seattle for our Memorial Day Holiday weekend, and there are two terrific bikes for sale on craigslist that are very affordable.

1994 Honda XR650L Dual Sport $1,900

“Selling my trusty xr 650. In very good condition with 12K miles on her, regularly maintained, fresh oil & filter change, new brake pads, seat cover and wheel bearings. Great gas mileage. This bike preform well both on and off road. Fully street legal with DOT approved tires. Tabs good thru May 2009. $1,900.”

…marketing executives in the motorsports industry are calling these enduros/dual purpose bikes, “Adventure Bikes” now. I also like the moniker, “Urban Survival Bike.”

1987 Cagiva/Ducati Elefant 650 Dual Purpose Enduro $3,000 La Connor, WA

…it’s gotta be rare, I’ve never heard of the critter before. And a v-twin engine on a dual sport bike, made by Ducati? With a fancy under-the-seat exhaust pipe setup? Neat-o! Yes, let me begin add to my Ducati collection with this fine specimen. I couldn’t tell ya if they’re good bikes or not, but it’s got the words “Paris/Dakar” in it, so it must be one tough hombre. And the timing belts were changed every year. Because the owner was very meticulous with its maintenance… or because it needed it? You be the judge.

1984 Honda XL125 Enduro, $2,000 ONLY 33 Miles! Stanwood

…Holy moly, look at that! 33 miles! Yikes. Air cooled 125cc single cylinder enduro. Did we mention it has only 33 miles on ‘er? That’s not amazing, that’s a phenomenon. This would make a great beginner bike as long as you can throw a leg over (earlier XLs are somewhat high, but this 125 is probably low enough for just about anyone.) 1988 Honda NX650 $2,300 U District Seattle

“great bike with low miles totally reliable and great on gas. Just fast and big enough for the freeway. $2,300.”

…The NX line wasn’t long lived, at least here in the states. There was also a NX250 Honda tried to classy up the dual sport motorcycle. Here’s a better picture of the same year and model NX (not this particular bike for sale, though, mind you.) I don’t know anything about the NX650 besides the fact that it’s actually a twin cylinder engine and it’s water cooled. Originally they didn’t come outfitted with knobby tires, so it’s more of an ‘urban survival’ motorcycle than a full fledged off-roader. There’s a NX650 Dominator line popular in the world - hasn’t made its way to US shores, though. But if you’re in the market for a dual sport, and want something a little different than everyone else’s KLR/XL, a NX650 might be for you.

1984 Honda XL250 $1,950 Stanwood

“Honda XL 250 dual sport. Only 429 miles! Original condition, tool kit still on the bike. One of the last low seat hight motorcycles. I am 5′8″ and can stand flat footed while seated. Bike is in excellent condition, less small dent in tank. Always stored inside. Runs great, looks great.” … I debated highlighting this cycle - I personally think the poster’s asking price of $2,400 is a wee bit high for a 250, but how often do you see a near-perfect 24 year old bike with less than 500 miles on the odometer? But this would make a great beginner motorcycle, too. It drops over, nothing to cry over, it’s an enduro (pardon me, *adventure cycle*.) When I was 16 and wanted to upgrade from my little Yamaha RX50 to a 250, this XL250 was a strong contender. Sometimes I wonder how different my motorcycling life would have been me if I went down the enduro road…**UPDATE** The owner lowered their price down to $1,950. Now, you have nothing stopping you from checking this cherry enduro out.
