…As a new motorcycle rider, you have quite a few good quarter-liter cruiser motorcyles to choose from. The Honda Rebel, of course; the Yamaha Virago 250 (my favorite of the class); and Suzuki’s GZ 250. The GZ here only has one cylinder, but its looks and styling are tops. New, these bikes go for $3,249 from a dealership, so you’re saving considerable coin with this used one. The owner/seller didn’t specify which year his/her Suzuki GZ 250 is, and the image shown in the craigslist ad (and here) is a stock Suzuki image. It’s a great beginner’s bike, it looks a little different than the Honda Rebel, and it’s priced very well.

…This isn’t perhaps the most exciting motorcycle on Craigslist, but with under 4k miles at twelve hundred bucks, you’ll have a hard time finding a better, more reliable deal. It’s got some good extras, too: large windscreen and passenger backrest.

1983 Honda Ascot FT 500 $1,200

Purchased from the original owner in ‘92, I have meticulously maintained it; all the service records as well as the factory shop manual go with it. It has always been garaged, gone 53,000 miles, has nearly new Metzler tires, oil and filter were recently changed. It has a temperature gauge, tachometer, center stand and is shaft drive. …how many folks have spent time on one of these classic Ascots? This was one of the most popular motorcycles of its day, especially for the younger guys. On any given day, there were probably a dozen of them parked at my high school, owned by teenage riders (while I had to do with my lowly CM250…heck, it was all I could do to convince my mother to buy a 250, a big boy 500 bike like the Ascot was “out of the question.”) This VT 500 Ascot is not to be confused with the FT500 which was a single cylinder bike. This VT500 Ascot has a twin cylinder engine and a shaft drive. It cuts a very classic profile, and this particular specimen looks to be in great shape. It does have, it looks like, an upgraded F1 exhaust. We don’t see very many good condition Honda Ascot 500 motorcycles for sale, so if you’re hankering to see one and are feeling nostalgic, click the image to contact the owner.

…as far as mid-size cruisers go, you have a few choices out there. There’s this Kawasaki Vulcan 500 LTD, Honda’s VLX 600 is a good choice that’s been around for decades; Yamaha’s 650 cruiser line, and Suzuki’s single cylinder Savage (sorry, the S40). This Vulcan 500 has a parallel twin cylinder, water cooled engine. There’s nothing remarkable about it, but as a starter bike that’s just what you’re looking for. It’s got a low seat height, and since it’s been in production for more than a decade there’s no shortage of affordable parts, replacement or aftermarket. Motorcycle online has a good review of the Vulcan 500 here, and while it didn’t win any awards with them, it ain’t too shabby, either, and this one is priced to move. …Here’s a 2006 Ninja EX 250 for sale at a very good price. Seems the seller/owner is motivated - these great beginner sportbikes can get a bit more money, especially those 2 years old or less. Since it was a commuter, it might have a few more miles on it than a non-commuter. But if you’re looking for a beginning sportbike this one is definitely one to look at. …You won’t be a beginner for long if you start right. Heck, my second bike was a 250. What I like about the GZ250 is that it’s not a Rebel. Seriously, Rebels are everywhere. Try something a little different. The GZ has a really cool cruiser look to it, and this one sports a rare hunter green. With under 8k miles, it’s just broken in. 1991 Suzuki Bandit GSF 400 $2,900 - West Seattle

…Here’s another what some may call beginner’s bike that is really a wolf in sheep’s clothing. You can have mega fun on this guy. Light, tight, built to carve corners. Don’t let the ’small’ 400cc engine size lull you to thinking it’s a step above a scooter. The Japanese love the 400 class of bike - FZR400s and Interceptor 400s were some damn fine motorcycles. It has a ridiculously high redline - 14,000 rpm. If I were 70 pounds less, I’d love to have a 400. From an excellent, thorough rider-written review:

2003 Suzuki GZ 250 $1,850 - Edmonds, WA

“I bought this bike used in 2004. It’s pretty clean low miles at 2,975. The previous owner had let it fall over and it bent the hand brake lever a little and it has a few scratches here and there. This is a very clean reliable motorcycle, always garaged and had its oil changes and such and everything works great on it. I constantly get complements on it. Depending on how you ride I have managed between 60 and 80 miles per gallon. The tab is good to June 2008 and the tires are in great shape. $1,850.”
